Bobby Sands was a member of the Provisional IRA, a poet, rebel, songwriter, musician, leader, and friend to many. His friends recall how he would play "Me and Bobby McGee" on his guitar endlessly, and perform it for the fellow prisoners when they could sneak one into the jail. He later wrote famous folk songs such as "Back Home in Derry" while imprisoned in the H Block.
Bobby Sands died on hunger strike a political prisoner on May 5th, 1981. The next day, Bobby Weir and the Grateful Dead would take the stage at Nassau Coliseum on Long Island, NY and dedicate an absolutely rippin' "He's Gone" to the rebel hero. As the first chords to the song began, Bobby Weir would proclaim "this one's for Bobby Sands" to an uproar of cheers.
